It was a great experience working as a supervising senior sports chiropractor and medical officer at the Australian Beach Volleyball Championships, the Australian Youth Championships, and the Futures World Pro Tour of Beach Volleyball in Coolangatta over March of this year.
I was responsible for musculoskeletal treatment and medical first aid/ first response when indicated. Most of the injuries treated were shoulder, lower back, and patella related injuries.
My self and other sports chiros treated most athletes at these championships at one stage or another (I would estimate well above 80% of all athletes). This included Australian Championships Elite division and Futures World Pro Tour winners. By all reports, all involved where verry happy with the level of care provided.
As is always the case, the most rewarding aspect of this type of work is not only helping athletes perform at their best but also the new friendships made. I found the Beach Volleyball community to be extremely friendly and open, even at the very highest levels. It was a joy working with everyone at these events.
